Sofi visted Cambodia for the first time in the summer of 2015 and was so impacted by the kids she returned only 4 months later in October. Here’s a little piece of her story.
So, how was my mission trip to Cambodia?! The word that best sums it all up would be…
E X T R A O R D I N A R Y. This was my second trip back to the country, so I was immediately embraced and greeted by all the smiling faces at New Life Missions orphanage centers of Phnom Penh, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey. The relationships I’ve been able to form with these children is just priceless. Although there is obviously a language barrier between us, love was never an issue to express or receive. From mentorship to planning activities/outings, singing worship songs and spending quality time with them, time seemed to fly by all too quickly.
For those of you have not heard about New Life Missions, they are an international organization that focuses on training nationals to reach Cambodians for Christ. As an outreach of that ministry, orphanage centers were founded to care for the orphans there. NLM eventually partnered with The Fallen Sparrow Foundation to raise support and sponsorship for these children. I was privileged enough to sponsor a child myself in June and it brings me such happiness to know that his education, food, and medical needs are being met and cared for. The boys and girls there have unique stories as to how they became orphans. Poverty is pretty vast in Cambodia, so a lot of parents were unable to provide financially toward their child’s daily needs and education (public school is not free). Though it pains me that these kids are experiencing life without a mother or father, I am at least comforted to know that they are in wonderful hands with New Life Missions. The organization is raising these children up to be future leaders in Cambodia – a country in need of hope and light. Their love for the Lord is truly remarkable and authentic. How encouraging it was to witness such great faith, unity, and joy – all within a small community!
In closing, I’d like to share this verse – “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 24:40.
Thank you for being a part of my Cambodia adventure!
